Abstract

The article is devoted to the series of water-colours «Campi Phlegraei» of Italian painter Pietro de Fabris at the time of scientific expedition of lord William Hamilton (1730–1803), the British minister in South Italy, to the crater of Vesuvius. Both of them — the painter and the Hamilton, patron, collector, which had occupied with passion of volcanic problems — were prominent figures in the history and culture of the Age of Enlightenment. Their collaboration is an example of scientific and artistic achievements of the Italian culture of the age of «enlightened form of government» during period of dynasty of Spanish Bourbons.
