Abstract
The article is devoted to the analysis of the first historical painting by Vasily Surikov “The Morning of the Streltsy Execution” in the context of the artist's oeuvre, whose works are axial for Russian culture. Taking into account the experience of previous approaches to the analysis and interpretation of this picture, it is proposed to supplement the view on its explication and see larger ideological layers that characterize V.I. Surikov as an original philosopher, acutely perceiving the problems of his homeland and revealing the deep roots of their occurrence. Being in Russia at the time of serious upheavals, the artist turns to one of the crucial points in Russian history. It not only depicts the confrontation between Peter the Great and his half-sister Princess Sophia, streltsy and the Preobrazhensk regiment, but also seeks to show exactly how the people understood and evaluated these events. In this study, the focus is on the image of the girl in the foreground. The analysis of one character in the picture and the disclosure of its semantics continues the tradition of determining significant details in the paintings of V.I. Surikov and presents him as a philosophical artist.
