Abstract
The article substantiates the relevance of an integrated methodological approach in the study of temple architecture in Mongolia. This approach is based on the iconological method, which is already actively used to describe and interpret temples in other cultural regions. A comprehensive methodology should be based on the knowledge of the canonical treatises in the field of architecture and temple construction, as well as religious semantics and Buddhist metaphysics. This allows a deeper interpretation of the monuments of Mongolian temple architecture. At the same time, it seems very heuristic to use mandala as the initial symbolic basis of temple architecture. The purpose of the article is to substantiate the integrated methodological approach, as well demonstrating its application in the architectural and semantic analysis of temple architecture. The article presents the result of the analysis of two significant architectural objects of Mongolia — Erdene Zuu and Gandan Puntsag Choilon, erected in different time periods.
