The history of the study of Kostroma Church art from 1958 to 1991

Abstract

The article provides a detailed overview of the restoration work in the Holy Trinity Ipatiev Monastery and other churches in the city of Kostroma, which were carried out from the late 1950s – early 1960s. It is shown that Kostroma art critics deduce the beginning of the formation of the style of Kostroma icon painters from the Moscow school of icon painting. It is noted that during the opening of frescoes and icons by restorers, new masterpieces of ancient Russian art were discovered, which were described and introduced into scientific circulation. The main stages of this restoration and research work are given; names of leading experts are named. It is explained that the work was carried out first at the all-Russian, then, much later, at the regional level, which was due to the lack of a sufficient number of restorers and art historians in Kostroma.
