Abstract

This article aims to highlight the contributions of Jan Frantsevich Ciaglinski (Tsionglinsky) (1858–1912/13), a teacher and mentor to artists of the late 19th and early 21st centuries. As an extraordinary figure, he exerted a profound influence on the creative paths of painters who were often diametrically opposed in their artistic pursuits — ranging from Ivan Bilibin to Pavel Filonov. The names of Ciaglinski’s students, compiled by researcher M.A. Gurenovich, are introduced into scholarly circulation at the first time. By systematically analysing students’ recollections of Ciaglinski’s teaching methods, the article reveals key aspects of his approach, which combined traditional academic foundations (such as anatomy, perspective, and composition) with innovative techniques (such as a focus on colour and light, spot work, and the synthesis of form and space). It also highlights Ciaglinski’s emphasis on the importance of music in the creative process. The article demonstrates a direct connection between Ciaglinski’s teaching system and the development of avant-garde trends in Russian art of the early 20th century, emphasizing his role as a “bridge” between the academic tradition and the avant-garde, as first noted by E.Yu. Turchinskaya. The article also examines the “learning environment” in the Liteiny Studio, including its informal aspects, and identifies the creative and personal connections between students. Finally, it traces the influence of Ciaglinski’s teaching on the future work of his students.
