Abstract
This article is devoted to the personality and work of Wu Guanzhong, an outstanding Chinese artist of the 20th century, who determined the development of modern national painting. The focus of the work is the first stage of the creative biography of the master (1919–1949), which until now has not entered the sphere of scientific interests of Russian and foreign researchers. Based on the translations, study and systematisation of disparate sources, the article reconstructed the formation years of Wu Guanzhong in the profession, the milestones of the artist's training, which determined his creative credo for the rest of his life. The introduction into scientific use of these foreign-language sources (not translated into Russian), including the materials of the artist's autobiography inscribed in the historical and cultural context of the era, significantly expand the idea of Wu Guanzhong's creative path, help to comprehend his artistic strategy, multidimensional embodied in the work of the second half of the 1970s.
