Abstract

The article is devoted to various features of carpet weaving of the Eurasian nomads in antiquity and in the Middle Ages. The compositional principles of ornamentation used in carpets, the semantics of individual motifs, the technology of making felt carpet are analyzed. The author compares two types of traditional Mongolian carpets — «shirmel» and «shirdeg». As an example, the carpet of the Hunnian epoch and the carpet of the Yuan period are used.
