Abstract

This article focuses on the work of Jiang Zhaohe (1904–1986), an outstanding Chinese artist whose artworks reflect the social and cultural changes in China in the 20th century. In recent decades, scholars and art enthusiasts have shown a strong interest in the artistic legacy of the master, both in China and beyond. His paintings are constantly exhibited, becoming the focus of scholarly publications and dissertations that examine the fusion of tradition and modern trends, the evolution of figurative painting, and advancements in art teaching. However, despite the increased attention, there has not yet been a comprehensive analysis of his artistic method as a unique form of intercultural visual thinking. This article presents an in-depth analysis of key works, revealing the features of composition and line in his paintings. A semiotic approach allows us to reveal the symbolism of images and plots. Particular attention is paid to Jiang Zhaohe’s distinctive techniques, including his masterful use of ink and brush, chiaroscuro techniques, and the incorporation of Western drawing methods, as well as his pedagogical work as a teacher at the Academy of Fine Arts. The paper examines critical reviews of Jiang Zhaohe's contemporaries and students regarding his impact. It is noted that his work combined tradition and innovation, playing an important role in the development of the national artistic tradition and the formation of China's cultural identity.
