Abstract
The article presents an analysis of the travelling project of the Sakhalin Regional Art Museum, entitled “Island of Fish in the Far Sea”. In 2013, the museum undertook a tour which saw it unite with partner museums of Central Russia — Vladimir, Arkhangelsk and Vologda regions. The exhibition presented, for the first time, paintings and graphics created by artists from Sakhalin alongside works of the Nivkhs, Uilta, Evenks and Nanai folk crafts. The objective of this research is to analyse the thematic and exhibition plan, as well as the key works shown in the exhibition, in order to gain insight into the manner in which the traditional culture of the indigenous peoples of Sakhalin is represented. The art of the indigenous peoples of the northern Sakhalin region is represented by works created by the artists themselves, made from traditional materials (fish skin, seal fur, rovduga — suede made from reindeer skin). These works are characteristic of the original culture of reindeer herders and ichthyophags of the Far Eastern region. In the exhibition section entitled “Art of Sakhalin artists”, works representative of each historical period in the island's artistic development were selected, simultaneously elucidating the history and geographical characteristics of the Sakhalin Oblast. The analysis yielded the conclusion that the juxtaposition of folk art and fine art in the context of portraying the cultural and geographical images of the island region enabled the revelation of the distinctive characteristics of the regional culture of Sakhalin and the Kuril Islands, as well as the presentation of talented artists and original masters.
