Abstract

The paper considers deer statues from burial mound Filippovka-1 attributed to the Sarmatian culture of the 4th century BC as an unparalleled phenomenon of world art, history and archaeology. Despite their uniqueness, the deer statues are integrated into the animal-style symbolic system of the Siberian-Scythian civilization. Analysis of artistic, technological and semantic features of the deer artifacts from Filippovka makes it possible to reveal intricate symbolism of the image such as its association with astronomical knowledge and the category of otherness. Based on the studies conducted by the higher-level Soviet and Russian scholars, historians, archaeologists and ethnographers, the author of the paper advocates the theory of the origin of the deer image as the major one in the hierarchy of animal symbols in Eurasia during the Stone Age. When analyzing the research material, the author comes to the conclusion that in the Scythian-Siberian civilization the deer symbolized Mother Nature, the Feminine Principle of being.
