Abstract

The article is devoted to the study of the forms of interaction of international exhibition art projects of the 20th – 21st centuries (biennale, triennial and similar events) with the city. Despite the prevalence and relevance of these festivals, their impact on the urban environment has not been fully studied. The author conducted a comprehensive study using traditional art and semiotic methods of analysis. As a result, a typology of the forms of interaction of international exhibition art projects with the urban environment is presented: from the city as the theme of the exhibition and the subject of the image as part of a separate work to the exit of art objects into the space of streets, performances and street art. The  influence of exposition art projects on changing the functional purpose of entire neighborhoods and the sociocultural environment, as well as the inverse effect of the “genius of place” on the exhibition, are also noted.
