Fine arts of the Sakhalin Koreans in a cultural and historical context

Abstract

The article is dedicated to the examination of the distinctive cultural practices and the fine art of the Koreans on Sakhalin. These practices have been shaped by a complex interplay of factors, including the integration of Korean traditions, the influence of Russian culture, and the specific circumstances of this small ethnic group's settlement on the island. The Korean population on Sakhalin has undergone a complex process of adaptation and integration into the multi-ethnic and multicultural Soviet and Russian society. During this period, this ethnic group developed a distinctive culture, which manifested in various forms, including everyday objects, as well as artistic, visual, theatrical and musical expressions. This is the first time that this topic has been the subject of a comprehensive scientific study. The material included works of folk art and fine arts from the collections of the Sakhalin Regional Museum and the Sakhalin Regional Art Museum. Additionally, it comprised art literature, archival documents on the history of Korean theatre on Sakhalin, and interviews with representatives of the Korean diaspora. The research was conducted using cultural-historical and iconographic methods.
