Abstract

The article aims to introduce a previously unpublished icon from the collection of the Kremlin Museums into scholarly circulation. The icon is attributed to the early 16th century and belongs to the Moscow tradition. The author examines the icon's iconographic features and comes to the conclusion that the gestures of the Mother of God and the Child are due to the influence of Italian Quattrocento models. The Kremlin icon, as a work of high style, is at the origin of the further development of the iconographic type of the Our Lady of Shuya, which was particularly widespread in the Russian North. The Moscow origin of the iconography was soon forgotten.
