Abstract

The anniversary of the defeat of the Japanese army on the Khalkhin Gol River will be marked in September 2024, 85 years after the event occurred. The triumph of the Mongolian and Soviet forces constituted a pivotal moment in the trajectory of the 1940s, marking the onset of a series of significant developments. The theme of the Khalkhin-Gol battle was also reflected in the fine arts, particularly in monumental sculpture. The most notable monument is the one created between 1981 and 1984 by a joint Soviet-Mongolian group of sculptors and architects. One of the contributors was Tsevegmid Amgalan, a gifted sculptor and graduate of the Repin Academy of Arts. Given the paucity of coverage of Ts. Amgalan's work in Russian art history, the author of this article has identified several key objectives. Primarily, it is necessary to examine the sculptor's life and career, with a particular focus on his training in Leningrad. Secondly, an analysis of the compositional elements of the monument commemorating the victory at Khalkhin Gol is required. To achieve this, the study employs a combination of historical-biographical and iconographic methods.
