
Until April 1, 2022, the Russian Academy of Arts is accepting applications for participation in the international scientific conference “Landscape in Russian Art in the Second Half of the 19th – Early 20th Centuries. The Evolution of the Genre”, which will take place on May 18–19, 2022.
Conference topics
Key issues in the development of the landscape genre in Russian art of the second half of the 19th – early 20th centuries:
- the role of stylistic and aesthetic trends of the time in the context of changes in the poetics of the landscape genre;
- realistic, impressionistic, neo-romantic, symbolist and modernist trends in landscape drama in the second half of the 19th – early 20th centuries;
- individualization of landscape thinking. The influence of the peculiarities of the artists' perception of space and time on the formation of the figurative structure of the work;
- "mood landscape" and philosophical and associative qualities of the Russian landscape school;
- iconographic solutions of images of nature in painting and graphics of the second half of the 19th – early 20th centuries, expansion of the range of landscape motifs;
- semantic modulations and the question of the boundaries of the genre in the landscape of the modern era.
Conference Regulations
The presentation time limit is 20 minutes. Illustrations should be submitted electronically (in the form of a PowerPoint presentation). The conference materials are expected to be published.
The conference will be held in a mixed format: in the White Hall of the Russian Academy of Arts (Moscow, Prechistenka, 21) and online on the ZOOM platform. It is proposed to broadcast on the YouTube channel of the Russian Academy of Arts.

It is important to indicate in the email subject: Landscape. Genre evolution_Application
The application must contain the following information:
- full name of the participant (in full);
- place of work, position, scientific degree (for graduate and undergraduate students, please also indicate the name of the supervisor);
- title of the report;
- theses (from 500 to 1000 characters);
- contact details: phone number, e-mail address;
- the intended format of participation (face-to-face or online).
The Organizing Committee reserves the right to reject the application if its content does not correspond to the topic, goals and scientific level of the conference.
