Scientific conference “Photography as art. Russian pictorialism "in the Russian Academy of Arts and the State Tretyakov Gallery

The State Tretyakov Gallery and the Russian Academy of Arts, the Institute of Theory and History of Fine Arts of the Russian Academy of Arts invite, on December 13-15, 2021, researchers of the art of photography, specialists from museums, archives and libraries to take part in the scientific conference “Photography as Art. Russian pictorialism ”, organized in connection with the personal exhibition of Nikolai Andreev at the State Tretyakov Gallery.

On September 23, 2021, the exhibition "Photographer Nikolai Andreev. The Master of pictorialism". Its task is to show his art in the context of Russian realistic landscape and neoclassical painting of the first half of the twentieth century.

In 2019, the Russian Academy of Arts and the Institute of Theory and History of Fine Arts of the Russian Academy of Sciences organized the first international conference "Photography as Art", dedicated to the study of modern concepts of the art of photography and the study of national art schools and styles of this art form during the 19th – 21st centuries. The joint conference with the State Tretyakov Gallery in 2021 will allow specialists to focus on one of the most important areas for understanding the Russian photographic tradition.

Previously, pictorialism as an artistic phenomenon was not represented in the Tretyakov Gallery. Filling this gap has become an important event in the history of the formation of the museum's photographic collection. Thanks to the appearance of a new section in the gallery's collection and the first historical exhibition dedicated to the work of the photographer-artist, a scientific conference dedicated to the art of photography will be held in its halls.

Conference topics

The purpose of this conference is to present a range of research areas of artistic visual culture of the USSR and Russia. The work of Nikolai Andreev gives an opportunity to talk about a variety of phenomena of Russian art and about the problems of artistic photography in general.

The following topics are offered for reports and discussion:

  • Russian painting and photography
  • Pictorialism in Russia
  • Creativity of Nikolai Andreev
  • Photographic organizations: The Russian Photographic Society (RFO) and the All-Russian Society of Photographers (VOF)
  • Museification and the history of studying the creative heritage of pictorial photographers
  • Pictorialism and visual culture of the 20th – 21st centuries (graphics, cinema, photography, book art)
  • Pictorial photography and photography of late modernism in the USSR and Russia
  • Russian photographers at international exhibitions of the 19th – 21st centuries
  • Russian pictorial photography in the context of the world photographic process
  • Rethinking the phenomenon of pictorial photography at the end of the 20th – beginning of the 21st century

Conference timing

The timing of the reports is 20 minutes.

The languages of the conference are Russian, English. The conference is supposed to be in a hybrid format with live participation of speakers, as well as with online reports and broadcast sessions.

During the days of the conference, the meetings will be held on December 13, on Monday, in the White Hall of the Russian Academy of Arts, st. Prechistenka, 21, and 14-15 December, on Tuesday and Wednesday, in the Lecture Hall of the Engineering Building of the State Tretyakov Gallery, Lavrushinsky per., 12.

During the days of the conference, a special excursion for the conference participants will take place around the exhibition “Photographer Nikolai Andreev. Master of Pictorialism ".

According to the results of the conference, it is planned to publish a collection of scientific articles.
