The Russian Academy of Arts and the Research Institute of Theory and History of Fine Arts of the Russian Academy of Arts invite you to take part in the International Scientific Conference "Graphics in Church Art of the Late 15th – 19th Centuries" on December 15–17, 2021.
The conference will be held in a hybrid format: in the White Hall of the Russian Academy of Arts (Moscow, Prechistenka, 21) and online on the Zoom platform. The conference will also be broadcast on the PAX YouTube channel.
The relevance of the project is due to the fact that in recent years, certain types of graphics have been considered by scientists in the context of church art, namely: miniatures, icon samples (traces), engraving. Graphics as a special kind of church art in general has not become the subject of serious scientific research and discussion for a long time.
The conference is supposed to discuss a wide range of problems associated with the functioning of engraving in Christian art and the role of graphics in church art.
Conference topics
- Ornamental and subject miniature, its evolution, mutual influence of engraving and painting;
- Iconic traces as a special type of church graphics, preserving the ancient canons of icon painting and adapting new techniques and tricks, which were gradually "Russified", merging into the national tradition;
- Engraving as an independent genre of church art (illustration of the Holy Books, pilgrim relics or icons), as an iconographic source of church wall paintings, icons, decorative items, architectural decor;
- Techniques and methods of processing domestic and foreign graphic sources by Russian masters and artists of other national schools who used the same engraved samples (for example, the Bibles of Piscator, Borcht, Merian, the Gospel of Natalis, which are well known to us, etc.);
- The influence of the original and printed graphics on the process of transferring plastic and iconographic innovations during the transition from the culture of the Middle Ages to the culture of the New Age in the church art of various regions and countries (Western and Eastern Europe, Greece, the Balkans, Latin America, China and many others);
- Reflection in the graphics of the church content of the "dual" nature of Russian art, where since the 16th century pro-Western and national trends have coexisted, opposed and fancifully merged;
- Sources of the formation of Russian engraved popular print.
Conference schedule
The time limit for the presentation is 20 minutes. Illustrations must be submitted electronically (in the form of a Power Point presentation).
The publication of the conference materials is expected.

Applications for participation in the conference are accepted until October 1, 2021 to two addresses: nii-arts@yandex.ru and drevrus-niirah@yandex.ru. In the subject line, please indicate: Conference_Graphics in Church Art_Application
The application must contain the following information in Russian and English:
- Full name of the participant (in full);
- Place of work or study (for undergraduates, please also indicate the name of the supervisor);
- Title of the report;
- Abstracts (from 500 to 1000 characters);
- Contact information: phone number, email address;
- Intended format of participation (face-to-face or online).
The organizing committee reserves the right to reject applications, the topic and content of which will not correspond to the goals, topics and scientific level of the conference.
