The Research Institute of Theory and History of Fine Arts of the Russian Academy of Arts invites you to take part in the All-Russian Scientific Conference "Animalism in Russian Art of the 18th – early 20th centuries" in November 2021. Applications are open until October 1, 2021.
The conference is part of a series of scientific events organized by the department of Russian art of the 18th – early 20th centuries of the Scientific Research Institute of the Russian Academy of Arts and dedicated to the Russian artistic culture of the New Age.
The November conference is devoted to a broad topic: the animalistic genre and animalistic motives in the visual arts. This topic does not often attract the attention of art critics today, despite the abundance of artistic monuments and a sufficient number of written evidence associated with them, requiring the attention of researchers.
Images of animals have been present in art throughout its history. A large number of works of art, including animalistic motifs, are found in primitive, ancient, medieval and Renaissance art. Animalism of the New Age, in particular, domestic, is studied much less frequently. The conference is intended to fill this gap as much as possible and to intensify the study of animalistic images and motives in art.
The topic of the conference involves the participation of art historians and specialists in related humanitarian fields, including culturologists, literary critics and aesthetic philosophers, as well as artists interested in this topic.
Topics:
- the place and functions of the animalistic genre in the academic and non-academic art of the New Age;
- the creative method of an animal painter;
- animal studies between artistic and documentary directions of visual culture;
- images of animals in monumental and easel sculpture;
- images of animals captured in drawing, engraving, production graphics;
- foreign relations of domestic animal studies, animalistic genre in the works of representatives of Russia;
- the relationship between man and animal: from mythology and folklore to fables and parables (pictorial aspect);
- symbolic and allegorical reading of the animalistic theme: a rudiment or a living tradition?
- animalistic motives within the classical genres of painting (historical and battle painting, everyday life, portrait, landscape, still life);
- the fate of animal painting in avant-garde and modernist art of the 1900-1910s.
The conference is planned for November 2021.

Important! Students and graduate students planning to participate in the conference must provide a recommendation related to the report from the supervisor in writing (a digital photo or scan of the document is attached to the letter).
Illustrations to accompany the report must be prepared in JPEG format or in the form of a presentation in the .pptx version.
