
Moscow State University invites you to take part in the scientific conference “Portrait in Antiquity - Portrait all’antica” on November 22–23, 2023. Applications are open until September 30, 20203.
Specialists in the history of sculpture, painting, drawing, book miniatures, and numismatics are invited to participate.

- Theoretical, methodological and terminological problems of studying ancient portraits
- Portrait images made in various materials, techniques, formats, on various media (sculpture, painting, glyptics, numismatics)
- Ancient portraits in context: the connection of portrait images with socially representative, religious, funerary and other spheres of life
- Antique portraits in groups, ensembles, “galleries”
- The problem of representing individuality in ancient art: a person’s appearance, his character and attributes, historical and allegorical allusions
- The influence of ancient iconography on medieval and Renaissance portraiture
- Medieval reliquary busts
- Portrait bust and portrait medal in modern art
- Heroic portrait in the art of the Renaissance and allegorical portrait in European art of the New Age
- Imaginary portrait and retrospective portrait in antiquity and modern times
- Portrait in antique taste in the art of classicism and neoclassicism
- Portrait “in ancient taste” in the cultures of different countries and eras
- Discussions about human appearance, character and the art of portraiture in written and epistolary sources, fiction, theoretical treatises and art criticism
Conference Regulations
- giving a report: 15–20 minutes;
- presentation in the discussion: 5 min.
Forms of participation in the conference:
- face-to-face (presentation offline and online; publication in a collection);
- correspondence (publication in a collection).
Conference location: Kazan, National Art Gallery "Khazine" of the State Museum of Fine Arts of the Republic of Tatarstan (Kazan Kremlin, building of the museum complex "Khazine", Sheinkman proezd, 12, entrance 3).
The following are invited to participate in the All-Russian Scientific and Practical Conference: art historians, cultural experts, philosophers, historians, philologists, museologists, artists, as well as teachers, graduate students and undergraduates of art universities.
The collection “Eighth Kazan Art History Readings” is planned to be published following the results of the conference. The collection is assigned the appropriate library indexes and an international standard book number (ISBN). It is planned to register the collection in the scientometric database of the Russian Science Citation Index. Publication is free.
Travel and accommodation of non-resident participants is at the expense of sending organizations. The conference organizing committee invites non-resident conference participants to book hotel rooms on their own.

The Organizing Committee reserves the right to select applications. The selection results will be announced no later than October 20, 2023.
