Abstract
In 2022, the 100th anniversary of the USSR and the 90th anniversary of the Union of Artists of the USSR were celebrated. Both institutions are connected substantively with the history of the Soviet fine arts, the main artistic method of which was the method of socialist realism. Socialist realism was a unique artistic method which had no analogues in the history of world art. Its basic genres in painting were thematic and genre paintings, social, psychological and lyrical portrait. The paper attempts to show how during the five decades of the existence of socialist realism (1930–1980-ies) a great number of works glorifying the world and the labour of the Soviet man-creator of a new life were created. At the same time, the author admits the limitations of the method that was subordinated to the official ideology of the state and limited the freedom of artists in the choice of themes and stylistic techniques of the formal space of the paintings. The author of the study attributes the merits of the method of socialist realism of the preservation and development of artistic and pedagogical school in the art of the USSR and Russia.
