Abstract

The article delves into the iconography of the “Archangel Michael the Voivode” image in the traditional culture of the Vetka — Starodubye region. It synthesizes extensive research conducted by the Vetka Museum of Old Believers and Belarusian traditions named after F.R. Shklyarau on unique iconographic monuments discovered during expeditions prior to 1991. The study aims to identify the distinct features of the Vetka iconography of “Archangel Michael the Voivode,” examining its specificity, historical and cultural context, and the processes behind the creation and spread of this image. Using a historical-cultural approach and employing comparative, iconographic, and semiotic methods, the paper analyses the museum's exhibits — 18th and 19th-century Old Believer icons from the Vetka school — along with archival records and literary sources related to the region's icon painting and religious practices. The research investigates artistic and compositional choices, the variety of iconographic types, folk motifs, and religious symbols depicted by local masters. Additionally, the study categorizes variations of the iconographic scheme and proposes the hypothesis of an independent Vetka development of the 16th-century reined horse archetype (izvod). Special attention is given to the unique conceptualization of fire within the iconography and its associated soteriological semantics, as well as the diverse compositional structures and cultural symbols present in these works. The article also highlights the crucial roles played by historical and cultural contexts in the development of regional iconographic schools, the specificities of the Old Believer tradition, and the nuances of the image's perception in folk iconology. The findings allow for the classification of the primary compositional types characteristic of Vetka icon painting, establish the correlation between local cultural traditions and pan-Russian iconographic trends, and emphasize the significance of the “Archangel Michael the Voivode” image in folk culture and the religious consciousness of Old Believers.
