Abstract
This article examines traditional Chinese painting through the conceptual frameworks of Chinese political philosophy and legal theory. Drawing on an interdisciplinary methodology that combines philosophical analysis with art historical formalism, the study explores three foundational constructs in classical Chinese thought: the Dao tradition (道统) as the axis of moral legitimacy, the legislative tradition (法统) as the institutional rationality of rule, and the faith tradition (信统) as the sacral cosmological grounding of authority. Central to the inquiry is the theoretical model of Bao Gansheng, whose triadic system allows for a nuanced interpretation of the symbolic logic and expressive syntax embedded in Chinese pictorial culture. The second part of the study brings this framework into dialogue with Pierre Bourdieu’s theory of the artistic field. This comparative lens enables the identification of two historically embedded visual paradigms — yuanti-hua (院体画) and wenren-hua (文人画) — not as stylistic genres alone, but as institutionally differentiated yet functionally complementary modes of visualizing law, governance, and ethical order. Their juxtaposition reveals the embeddedness of Chinese art in ritual, legal, and moral systems of representation, and discloses how painting operates as a medium of symbolic governance. Special emphasis is placed on the notions of iconic pedagogy, the aesthetics of creative intentionality, and the visual epistemology of authenticity. By tracing conceptual threads through Confucianism, Legalism, and Daoism, and by investigating the pictorial praxis of xieyi (写意), as well as the implicit political messages encoded in the ideas of “government without governance” and “silent visual critique,” the study articulates a model of coordinated autonomy in Chinese painting. In this perspective, painting emerges not merely as a vehicle for aesthetic ideals but as a performative enactment of the philosophy of law and state, bridging moral cosmology and political pragmatics while sustaining a space for meditative and allusive vision.
