Abstract
The article focuses on the creative work of Sergey Vladimirovich Timokhov, a prominent graphic artist from Siberia and a member of the German Pashtov’s Krasnoyarsk woodcut studio. Timokhov’s craftsmanship is characterized by its remarkable diversity, evident in his choice of themes, mastery of various techniques, and the extensive range of methods used in his works. This article is the first attempt to analyse the work of this master, which has previously been overlooked by scholars. The study focuses on two graphic series, “Pages of Russian History” and “Troubled Times,” which formed the basis of Timokhov’s solo exhibitions, “Warrior, Defender, Hero” and “Defender of the Russian Land.” These exhibitions, dedicated to the 80th anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War, toured the cities of the Krasnoyarsk Territory and Khakassia in 2025. In these series, Timokhov explores the origins of Russian patriotism, spiritual strength, courage, and loyalty to the Motherland and its people, drawing inspiration from ancient chronicles, epics (bylinas), and legends. By comparing the graphic sheets with Old Russian texts, the author identifies the correspondence between graphic and textual imagery. The purpose of the article is to use methods of art historical and iconographic analysis to demonstrate the master’s search for an artistic representation of Russian patriotism and to reveal the specific visual techniques through which he reflects on the origins of this phenomenon in the national consciousness. The author highlights Timokhov’s execution technique, distinctive style, and talent for transforming the emotional essence of chronicles and legends into vivid and concise artistic images. Of particular significance were the interviews conducted with the artist in July and October 2025. This study provides a comprehensive evaluation of S.V. Timokhov’s artistic output and his contribution to contemporary Siberian graphic art.
