Abstract
The article examines the distinctive approach of Honoured Artist of Russia Gennady Fedorovich Borunov (1928–2008) to his creative process, as exemplified by an analysis of select central paintings from the artist's oeuvre. Notable examples of this mature period of creativity include “Chairman. Kolkhoz Autumn”, “Red Tractor” and “Ivan Polzunov”, which are held in the collection of the Altai State Art Museum. The creative method of G.F. Borunov has already been subjected to detailed examination in the dissertation study conducted by E.A. Mushnikova. This research builds upon and extends the existing study of this topic. The contribution of this publication is twofold. Firstly, it introduces drawings and sketches for the aforementioned works from the artist's family collection, which have not been previously analysed. Secondly, it contributes to the existing body of knowledge by offering a new perspective on these works. The formal and historical and biographical methods are employed to evaluate the extent of research into G.F. Borunov's creative legacy and to demonstrate the impact of his training at the Repin Institute of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture (in the creative workshop of B.V. Ioganson) on the evolution of his distinctive creative approach and the integration of the knowledge and principles acquired at the Academy of Arts into the development of his seminal artistic imagery. The analysis is based on previously published works on the artist, selected passages from G.F. Borunov's memoirs, reproductions of the works described in the article, as well as drawings and sketches for them.
